Greece constitutes 10.4% of the global production of Olive Oil; however little of Greece’s oil enters the world markets as a bottled Greek product. Most Greek olive oil is consumed domestically (sold directly by the mill to the final consumer). Greece has the highest per capita olive oil consumption in the world so a majority stays with the micro grower. Of the remainder, most is exported to major bottlers in Italy for blending with other extra virgin olive oils from various sources.
Greek Extra Virgin Olive Oil is recognized by blenders and bottlers as a component that raises the overall quality and flavor profile of an oil blend. In recent history the industry and the Greek government have tried to increase Greek oil’s competitiveness by reducing the sector’s dependence on bulk exports instead focusing more on selling differentiated Greek product.
