In 2020 it was noted that only 43% of homes in the USA had olive oil in their pantry. Couple that with the average consumption of olive oil in the US is only 1.2 liters per year per person, and what results is a very low penetration market. This is a direct result of price and cooking habits in America. Further Americans see olive oil as a high end garnish, rather than a daily consumable.
Olive oil consumption is vastly disparate around the world. The average Greek consumes 20 liters of Olive oil per year, while your average American consumes only the 1.2 liters. Your average Spaniard consumes 14 liters, while the average Italian and Portuguese use about 9 liters per year. This disparity is shrinking in the USA, as consumers have started focusing on health benefits and taste, rather than cost. However theUSA is a long way from reaching its European counterparts.
